Chess Club -

Coordinator: Ken Almon

Chess club meets each Friday morning from 7:15-8:15 in the media center

Benefits to Students:

Scholastic chess programs are growing not only nationally but internationally as well. School-related chess programs are resulting in more children playing more chess than ever before. Standardized Test scores drastically improve for students who play chess. True, chess does "make kids smarter", but it does much more than that. Chess allows children who do not perform well in school and do not appear to be smart to show how really clever they are. It gives them an arena in which to demonstrate their ability, which will show them in a positive rather than negative light. Chess also has been shown to improve attendance and behavior. Children who are often considered misfits, surprise themselves by excelling in chess, often finding out that they are much smarter when playing the game than even their apparently most clever classmates. Chess then becomes a passport into a world from which they felt excluded. It becomes a form of empowerment like literacy itself. Our school population is multicultural and consists of a large number of ESOL students. The beauty of chess is that it matters not what language or background you come from. Chess is the great equalizer.
