       Art Classes "Cash In"

Ms. Beck's and Ms. C Jones' Art classes, under the direction of Ms. Phillips, participated in the "Fundred" project last week. Each student created a Fundred--a unique piece of money. This is a national project that raises money to clean up lead contamination in soil in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. An armored truck is picking up the Fundreds from Berkmar Middle school in March. Organizers hope to collect 3,000,000 Fundreds from children all over the USA and exchange them in Washington DC this summer for $300,000,000 (yes, that is real money!) that will clean up and decontaminate the soil of New Orleans it so children living there will not suffer from lead poisoning in the future.

Checkmate

The NES Competitive Chess Team soared to a 5th place finish out of 20 teams this weekend at the Eastern Metro Regional Tournament.

The students were great ambassadors for NES - they not only performed remarkably well but were publicly recognized by the tournament directors for staying and assisting with clean up in the tournament area following the final round.

Team captains Melvin M. and Vanessa D.
led all NES players with 4 out of 5 wins!
